Our Impact 

The global spread of the pandemic Covid-19, did not affect the spirit of giving back at Transworld Group. Social distancing did not prove to be a barrier to touching human lives and we adopted to the digital platform to ensure virtual volunteering gave opportunities to lend time to support the vulnerable segments of the society. The new format of volunteering made it possible for volunteers to extend their support across the geographies without leaving their house and have ensured continuous and meaningful engagement with the beneficiaries to keep up the spirits during the difficult times.

International Day of the Seafarer 2020

An online Mental Health Talk for Transworld Group’s seafarers was organised to celebrate International  Day of the Sea Farer on 25th June 2020. The talk was facilitated by iCall - Initiating Concern for All - a mental health project of School Of Human Ecology, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai - to foster awareness on mental health and initiate dialogue on unique mental health challenges faced at sea. Students from Sriram Institute of Marine Studies participated in the discussion. Some senior officers of Transworld fleet, including the ones on-board, also shared their seafaring journey and their experiences. Support for Pandemic Covid-19

COVID-19, a global pandemic has registered millions of cases across the globe and are only on the rise. Transworld group continued its legacy of working for the community in disaster and crisis situations and stepped up to support global as well as Indian efforts towards mitigating COVID-19 through interventions made in India and global offices. In the first phase, contribution was made to PM Cares to assist government’s massive efforts for national preparedness and response for COVID-19. To support the front liners, 1000 bottles of 100ml and 30 bottles of 500ml sanitizers were given for Mumbai Police personnel. In Dubai, in partnership with Dubai Municipality and UAE Food Network, meals were given for 6 days to 275 sanitization workers of the National Disinfection program across the city each night during the campaign. Transworld Group procured 200 face shields from Imaginarium and provided to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation hospital healthcare workers. To meet the urgent need of PPE kits to safeguard the health workers who have been protecting and safeguarding people round the clock with immense care and compassion, in collaboration with InDeed - Dentsu Aegis Network (India), 300 PPE kits were provided to health care workers through engaging with Maharashtra Health Department, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
 
To avert the immediate hunger and starvation of the daily wage earners exacerbated by lockdown, the support was extended to provide ration to 500 families of daily wage workers residing in Asia’s largest slum - Dharavi in Mumbai with the support of Give India platform implemented by ActionAid India. In Karnataka, in partnership with Hasiru Dala, support of one month dry ration was extended to 500 women led waste picker families belonging to vulnerable groups such as women waste pickers diagnosed with long term illness, pregnant women, lactating mothers, single-parent women, and senior waste pickers. To support the contractual port workers in Kolkata, 10 days of nutritious meals were given to 400 with a local NGO partner- Parnasree Jeewandeep Sewasansthan. Transworld Saudi Arabia extended support by giving out a Reefer Container in collaboration with Al Muhaidib Land Transport to the volunteer’s wing of Ministry of Health, KSA.

Ramadan 2020 Initiatives 

This year annual Ramadan (The Holy month) initiatives of Transworld Group in the GCC were also diverted towards reaching out to people affected by Covid-19 and the resultant lockdown. Adhering to Government guidelines, in Dubai, dry ration was provided to 100 people for a month in partnership with SmartLife Foundation and Community Development Authority.  The ration packages were distributed by Dubai Police volunteers to people identified as most vulnerable by the UAE Government as part of their 10 Million Meals program. In partnership with Jebel Ali Free Zone Area (JAFZA), 900 meals were supported to the workers living in quarantine camps and in isolation facilities. In Qatar, 115 meals were distributed to workers in labor quarantine camps in partnership with Qatar Red Crescent Society.

Menstrual Hygiene Day

Transworld Group in collaboration with ML Dhawale Memorial Trust is promoting good health practices including Menstrual Hygiene Management for rural women and children of Bhopoli, Maharashtra. A pervasive culture of stigma and shame around #menstruation imposes restrictions on women, even more so for those in rural areas. During the lockdown the Transworld CR team created an educational video on menstrual hygiene management. Energizers and volunteers came together to develop this digital resource for the beneficiaries in Bhopoli. The video covers a range of issues rural women face during menstruation and best practices around menstrual hygiene. The video was launched on the occasion of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020 and will be showcased in the villages by our NGO partner during community health camps and awareness sessions.

National Nutrition Week

As part of Transworld’s commitment to the #SDG 2: Zero Hunger and #SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being, #National Nutrition Week was organized in the first week of September for the third consecutive year. The campaign supported daily wage earners as the crisis has had a severe impact on the lives of daily wage earners and their families.
 
On the occasion of National Nutrition Week in India, Transworld CR team organized multiple meal and grocery kit distribution drives across 8 locations to ensure that the community has access to healthy and nutritious food in these difficult times. In #Tuticorin our volunteers alongside NGO partner Indian Red Cross Society distributed 300 freshly cooked and nutritious meals to workers at construction sites, salt-pans and waste pickers. At Vizag, 30 waste pickers and their families were supported with family grocery kits distribution drive with the support of  Naa Vuru Vizianagram. We partnered with Robin Hood Army to distribute wholesome grocery kits to daily wage earners and reached out to 160 beneficiaries in Delhi, 100 in Mumbai, 158 in Kolkata and 80 in Chennai. We also provided 800 freshly cooked meals to poor communities in remote villages of Gandhidham with the support of NGO partner Seva Sarvopari during this time.
 
The concluding drive was held in the interiors of #Wayanad, Kerala wherein we reached out to 22 artisans and their families with groceries and essentials with help of our partner Utthan. Over 1800 beneficiaries were reached out through this initiative.

International Maritime Day

Transworld Group marked the World Maritime Day 2020 on 24th September with a panel discussion on Gender Diversity. Guest speakers, Mr. Ritesh S. Ramakrishnan, Joint Managing Director - Transworld Group, Ms. Anisha Ramakrishnan, Director Corporate Responsibility - Transworld Group, Ms Sanjam Gupta- Founder, Maritime SheEO & Director, Sitara Shipping Ltd, Ms Reshma Nilofer- India’s first woman maritime pilot and Ms Sumiit Cheema- President WISTA, India & Co-founder, Dycecorp Ltd deliberated on importance of gender equality, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and highlighted the important - yet under-utilized - contribution of women within the maritime sector . The session was also attended by cadets in training from shipping institutes to hear the insights on shipping as an evolving, exciting, and adventurous career and women’s participation in the industry. 

Corporate Responsibility Day 

To celebrate the spirit of volunteering, Transworld Corporate Responsibility Day is celebrated on 28th April 2020. The day is marked to pay homage to our founder, Shri R. Sivaswamy. The theme for this year was to extend a helping hand to empower the disadvantaged elderly.
 
While the current situation of pandemic brought in challenges for going out and volunteering, it helped us explore newer ways of continuing the spirit of giving back. The digital platform brought together all the Transworld-ites from across the globe. Volunteers from India, UAE, USA, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Singapore came together with one common goal- to give back to the elderly with the help of the NGO partner HelpAge India.
 
Through the day, 9 online volunteering sessions were conducted in Tamaraikulam Elders Village, Cuddalore; AnandIllam, Home for Elders in Neyvalli (Tamilnadu); Anand Vrudhashram in Palghar (Maharashtra); Multi-Facility Elder Retreat Home in Gurdaspur (Punjab) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Goa with 202 beneficiaries and more than 150 volunteers participating with their family members. These 7 homes were also supported with their daily supplies in collaboration with the NGO partner.

World Blood Donor Day

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an increased strain on blood resources and stocks have reached critically low levels. To mark the occasion of World Blood Donor Day - 14 Jun 2020, Transworld Group, Corporate Responsibility team initiated a social media campaign where volunteers took a pledge to donate blood within this year and to raise awareness on the scarcity of safe blood. 46 participants pledged to donate blood.
In continuation of the pledge, in Qatar blood donation camp was organized in partnership with KMCC and Qatar Brothers on 21st August where 86 people donated blood, reaching out to 258 beneficiaries.

World Youth Skills Day

To mark World Youth Skills Day celebrated on 15th July, the CR team along with volunteers engaged students from Manzil Center, UAE in imparting basic life skills through the medium of  storytelling, music and culinary endeavours on a digital platform on 16th July 2020. The objective of this group volunteering engagement was to bring forth the importance of equipping young people, particularly differently-abled youth, with basic life skills. 45 Transworld volunteers and their family members engaged with 16 students from Manzil Center in an afternoon of music, cookie baking, storytelling with props and Zumba. 

Support for Victims of Lebanon Explosion

A giant explosion took place at Beirut port on 4th August 2020. Transworld Group, Corporate Responsibility Team in Dubai organized a Donation Drive from 10th August - 19th August to support Emirates Red Crescent’s campaign, ‘To Beirut’. The collection helped people who have become homeless, lost loved ones, injured or impacted by the explosion. 21 staff members supported with dry food materials, clothes and hygiene kits. Upholding Sustainable Development, Goal No 12 Responsible Consumption & Production, during the campaign around 150 Kgs of relief material was collected & handed over to our NGO partner, UAE Emirate Red Crescent. 

World Humanitarian Day

The CR team conducted an online session celebrating the Unsung Heroes of the Informal Economy World Humanitarian Day on 13th August 2020. The talk was facilitated by Hasirudala, a social impact organization working with waste pickers. 
 
Over 81 participants joined in for this session. The session aimed to provide an insight into challenges faced by women in the informal sector of waste picking and celebrate their spirits and zest for standing strong – even during hardships. The positive energy shared by beneficiaries was extremely inspiring for the participants. Waste pickers contribute to local economies, to public health and safety to environmental sustainability while recognition for their contributions is not appreciated & they often face low social status, living and working conditions, and get little support from local governments. 

National (India) Sports Day

National Sports Day in India is celebrated every year on 29th August on the birth anniversary of India hockey legend Dhyan Chand to promote awareness on the positive impact sports and daily activities have in every individual's life. As an organization, Transworld through its Corporate Responsibility has supported the identification of talent and capacity building of budding athletes. Keeping up this spirit, Transworld-ites engaged with young footballers supported by Oscar Foundation over quick work out sessions followed by a football freestyling face off.
 
Participants discussed the contribution of sports has to the development of overall personality during the session with some inspiring stories of the young girls and boys who have reversed gender norms and consciously taken up football as career. They also highlighted the grassroots challenges budding athletes from vulnerable sections of society face on an everyday basis. The activity was attended by 55 Transworld-ites and 6 beneficiaries of the organisation. 

International Literacy Day

Transworld Group has committed to support education for all and believe in providing the resources to lesser privileged communities to continue their commitment to formal education and a lifetime of learning.  The Corporate Responsibility team conducted an online session on International Literacy Day, 9th September 2020, with NGO partner, Children's Jamghat. The session was about interaction with 25 Jamghat children which included experience sharing by the Jamghat children, poem recitation, skit, and group dance. Transworld volunteers & Jamghat team also engaged through self-defense activity, musical ice breaker and songs over the digital platform. Over 70 participants joined the session.

Awareness Session on Road Safety for Pedestrians for Drivers

Transworld Group participated in Dubai Chamber’s Sustainability Network’s campaign on “Pedestrian Safety”, from 13 - 17 September 2020. A session was organized for heavy-duty drivers to spread awareness on pedestrian road safety. A training session was organized for heavy-duty drivers highlighting the best practices to ensure their and pedestrians Road Safety with the help of resource material received from RTA. 15 drivers attended the session in Dubai.

Sustainability at Transworld

Wealth out of Waste Campaign during Give and Gain Week 2020

The Corporate Responsibility Team also initiated a campaign on Wealth out of Waste in our Dubai Office in collaboration with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Give and Gain project 2020. We received 26 entries over 2 weeks, where volunteers worked with their family members to make products out of materials generally discarded as trash. Following the 5 R Approach – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle, they created these products using plastic bottles, ice-cream sticks, used newspapers & glass bottles. Three best entries were from Mr. Aarish Posam, Ms. Anju Joseph and Ms. Minette Mungcal. The objective of this campaign was, to raise awareness that nothing goes as waste as long as you reuse, repurpose and recycle it.

World Environment Day 2020

The Corporate Responsibility team in collaboration with RUR GreenLife organized a digital composting workshop to address the impact of waste, particularly food waste, on the environment on 4th June to celebrate World Environment Day. Composting can divert food waste from going to landfills and completes the circular chain of food production, consumption, and safe disposal. Mr. Rajesh Desai, Chief Financial Officer, SSLL who actively composts at home shared his experience and what motivated him to make this choice. The workshop was to sensitize and motivate Transworld-ites to act at a micro-level and to encourage them to make sustainable choices.

Carbon Footprint of Plastic through Sustainable Water Usage

As part of endeavor to create plastic free offices, Transworld Group made a shift to usage of filtered drinking water from gallon plastic bottles in February 2019 in Dubai Headquarters. In one year from Feb 2019-March 2020, the carbon footprint of plastic bottles was reduced by 11.82 tons through consumption of 115,492 liters of filter water.

Dubai Chamber advanced CSR Label and stands 1st Runner Up for Arabia CSR Awards 2020
 
Transworld Group received the Dubai Chamber Advanced CSR Label as the first-time applicant, after being awarded Dubai Chamber CSR Label for the last year by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Group also got awarded the 1st Runner Up - Small Business category at the 13th Arabia CSR Awards by Arabia CSR Network.
 
Both the recognitions highlighted Group’s outstanding efforts in embracing social responsibility initiatives within its business to strive meeting the expectations towards its customers, employees, suppliers, the community, and the environment. This holistic approach makes Transworld Group a leader in the industry and in the region in CSR and sustainability domain.
 
Dubai Chamber CSR Label serves as an assessment tool and is designed in line with the highest international standards to meet the needs of business communities in the Middle East and particularly in the UAE. 2020 edition of the Arabia CSR Awards winners were adjudged based on international benchmarks such as the UN Global Compact principles, Global Reporting Initiative Standards, the European Foundation for Quality Management model, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
