Transworld Steps Up to fight Covid-19

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) announced as pandemic by World Health Organization has the world in its grip. With global governments going into “lockdowns” – the world is experiencing not just healthcare, but also an economic and humanitarian challenge as well. Transworld Group has always been on the forefront in supporting the community in the times of disasters – and more so in these trying circumstances – we have extended our support across multiple initiatives globally.

In India and UAE we have initiated a concentrated local action to support Government initiatives, healthcare workers and communities in need. The first phase of support started with joining the Government’s efforts through:

  • Donating to PM Cares Fund
  • Giving 1,000 bottles of sanitizers to Maharashtra Police
  • Providing meal support for 275 sanitization workers for 6 days from 30th March till 4th April in Dubai, partnering with Dubai Municipality and UAE Food Bank. These workers were conducting the National Disinfection Program across the city each night during the campaign period. The second phase of support to healthcare workers and communities such as daily wage earners in need:
  • Supporting daily wage earners in Maharashtra and Kandla, and vulnerable women waste pickers in Karnataka with dry ration kits for a month
  • Supporting contractual port workers in Kolkata by distributing meals
  • Distributing PPE kits to Maharashtra Government healthcare workers The Transworld Group remains committed to its mission of giving back to the community, especially when it is needed the most.

World Cancer Day 2020

Transworld Group in association with DATRI- India’s largest stem cell donor registry conducted awareness sessions on World Cancer Day 2020 on blood stem cell donation at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai and Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai. With our support they were able to garner commitment for stem cell donation from 167 students across both institutiosns. Till date Transworld Group has supported 355 potential stem cell donors in partnership with DATRI.

Mother and Child Care Programme

Since the last five years Transworld has adopted two villages, Ghaneghar and Karsud in the rural hinterlands of Maharashtra to provide mothers and children of the village with comprehensive health care services. We have been instrumental in transforming lives of women and children by providing them with ante-natal care, hospital deliveries, treatments and health-check-ups, ambulance services and awareness programmes. Till date more than 3000 women (mothers) and children have been supported with such services starting from pre-pregnancy stage to postnatal care.

World AIDS Day Campaign- 2019

Transworld Group Corporate Responsibility Team along with energizers and volunteers, marked World Aids Day in India & Singapore offices. Our Kandla team organized a medical awareness and voluntary blood testing for 130 port laborers and truck drivers with NGO partner Gujarat State Network of People Living with AIDS. 21 beneficiaries of the activity voluntarily tested their blood with GSNP+ for HIV. Cochin team joined hands with Cochin Port Trust and IMA to organize a public awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS through a talk and a skit to benefit 100 dwellers of Vathuruthy slums in the city. In Tuticorin, an awareness session and a medical camp was organized for truck drivers in partnership with TANSACS (Tamil Nadu State AIDs Control Society). 75 drivers benefitted from the session. In Singapore, a volunteering activity was arranged with HIV Patients, in partnership with CARE Shelter where our Singapore Team shared a meal and performed group song along with shelter volunteers. The campaign was aimed to benefit communities who are vulnerable and at high risk to HIV and AIDS as well as against ‘serophobia’ in all social settings.

World Toilet Day 2019

As part of our ongoing commitment to the UN SDG 6, Clean Water & Sanitation, Transworld Group observed World Toilet Day under the theme of ‘Living No One Behind’. Transworld Sri Lanka team conducted "Sanitation Drive & Awareness Campaign" for underprivileged children, partnering with SERVE NGO. The informative session focussed on good sanitation & cleanliness practices followed by distribution of hygiene items for 100 students by Transworld volunteers. The enthusiastic participation once again reflected our commitment to the value of Social Responsibility. In Mumbai, an awareness on handwashing techniques and hygiene practices was conducted in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, India at a Government School with participation of 80 students.

Movember Campaign – 2019

The month of November was dedicated to raising awareness about cancers in men particularly- prostate cancer. Transworld-ites showed their support by participating in the Shanab box campaign which was an innovative 30-day challenge targeted to raise awareness on cancers in men to encourage conversations around Prostate & testicular cancer which often is a taboo topic. They participated in this challenge by taking before and after photographs with and without their beards and moustaches. In India an interactive medical awareness on symptoms and detection of prostate cancer was conducted by an Oncologist from Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai in the Mumbai office. The objective of this campaign was not only to extend our solidarity towards the cause but also to make each one of us realize the significant impact cancer detection and treatment have on the psyche of patients.

National Nutrition Week - 2019

Transworld CR Energizers across Cochin, Tuticorin, Delhi and Mumbai offices visited Old Age Homes and Shelter homes in observance of National Nutrition Week to share a meal and extend our support to the underserved. Eye-check-ups for the elderly, nutrition awareness and meditation sessions for the elderly were organized. We reached out to 872 beneficiaries with 62 enthusiastic energizers across India offices.

World Alzheimer’s Day – 2019

CR Energizers and volunteers in Dubai marked the World Alzheimer’s Day on 21st September 2019. Facilitated by our NGO partner 4-get-me-not, a team of 45 transworld employees with family interacted with senior Emirati Alzheimer’s patients in the Old People’s Home in Sharjah. The volunteers and children put up a cultural programme, shared meals and distributed gifts to 48 senior patients and 32 support staff and 4-get-me-not senior volunteers, reaching out to 80 beneficiaries.

World No Tobacco Day- 2019

Corporate Responsibility energizers organized multiple awareness sessions in Tuticorin, Cochin, Delhi and Mumbai to encourage a tobacco free lifestyle on 31st May in observance of World No Tobacco Day 2019. Workplaces can have a significant impact on people’s lifestyle choices. It, therefore, offers a unique opportunity to address people’s health and influence their inclination to restrain from tobacco products. At Tuticorin, Transworld collaborated with BPCL and Rotary Club to create awareness around this issue and reached out to 105 beneficiaries ranging from TW contractual employees, BPCL employees and ground-level laborers and private drivers. Similar initiatives were undertaken at Cochin in partnership with Cochin Port Trust Hospital and Delhi with NGO ATTAC (Aim to Terminate Tobacco and Cancer) wherein we sensitized 50 employees on the harms caused by tobacco consumption, and they pledged to quit tobacco. The No Tobacco campaign was concluded on 11th June by organizing a public awareness at the Port User’s Building at JNPT, Nhava Sheva. This was in partnership with Salaam Bombay Foundation. The session was targeted to benefit blue-collared workers, contractual workers, shop owners as well as representatives from other shipping companies in that area. More than 100 people participated in the campaign and 24 of them registered themselves for Salaam Bombay’s ‘Tobacco Cessation Programme’.

Annual Blood Donation Campaign 2019

Our annual blood donation drive is organized in observance of World Blood Donors Day in the month of June every year. In 2019, as many as 391 employees registered to donate and 275 successfully donated their blood across offices which can save 837 lives.

Corporate Responsibility Energizers, Mumbai celebrate International Women’s Day 2019

Women and child health are a key intervention area under our Corporate Responsibility pillar of Health, Food and Water security at Transworld Group. In observance of International Women’s Day 2019 a day-long infotainment program was organized by the Company to provide a platform to over 300 participants including 230 women and adolescent girls, 47 community health volunteers, 15 female staff of MLD Trust and 12 CR energizers to come together and discuss the myths, prejudices and best practices around menstruation. A street play demonstrating the cultural taboos around menstruation was enacted by CR energizers followed by an interactive audio-visual awareness session on menstrual hygiene. Few women were felicitated by the Transworld CR team for being exemplary leaders to all women in the two villages. 300 hygiene kits including compostable napkins were distributed to all women present at the program to encourage sanitary napkin usage. The day ended by screening the movie ‘Padman’.

Global Campaign on #I Am and I Will Combat Cancer 2019

Health, food and water security being a key focus area of the Corporate Responsibility at Transworld, February was observed as Cancer Awareness month to mark the occasion of World Cancer Day. In partnership with DATRI an NGO- India’s largest stem cell donor registry with a mission to save those suffering from blood disorders like leukaemia, thalassemia and aplastic anaemia, a global campaign titled #I Am and I Will Combat Cancer was organized across operations in India, GCC region and Sri Lanka. Multiple awareness sessions on categories of blood disorders and the procedure for stem cell donation were conducted by DATRI representatives across 9 locations in India, 4 locations in GCC region and Sri Lanka. This was followed by voluntary registration by employees at each location. The campaign recorded an overwhelming response of 284 voluntary donor registrations at Transworld Group.

REBUILDING KERALA- 2018

Emergency Flood Response

The southern State of Kerala experienced 42% excess rainfall leading to the massive destruction caused by floods which displaced millions of people from their homes and forced them to live in relief camps in 2018. Transworld Group initiated disaster response programs through a three-pronged approach by carrying out relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work across four worst-affected districts of Kerala namely, Allepey, Palakkad, Paravur and Wayanad.

Driven by a sense of duty, we prioritised the Kerala support work over our own business commitments – turning our business-bound vessels & containers to supply aid. Our strength was our employees who came out in large numbers, offering support in a host of ways in end to end movement of shipments and cargo. Relief materials weighing approximately 896 tons were packed in our containers and delivered free of cost to Cochin port. The company supported the initiative and deployed containers and vessels from our business for 45 days to support the cause. Corporate Responsibility Energizers observe National Nutrition Week in Mumbai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam 2018

National Nutrition Week or Poshan Diwas, started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India, is celebrated annually to generate awareness and improve nutritious practice mindfulness among individuals/ communities/groups particularly for women and children from disadvantaged sections of society. To celebrate the National Nutrition Week in India, on 8th-9th September 2018, a team of 25 Transworld Corporate Responsibility energizers along with employee volunteers across Mumbai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam distributed 300 packets of nutritious meals comprising of idly, sambar and vegetable biryani and 150 packets of fruits to a total of 450 beneficiaries children and women. In Mumbai and Kolkata, the Robinhood Army was the facilitating partner organization to economically lower backgrounds. The Visakhapatnam team distributed to differently abled people at Dwarkamaye School for the Visually Impaired, Society for Education for Deaf & Dumb and Prema Samajam Old Age Home.

Health Camps and Rehabilitation Work

With the support of our NGO partner Habitat for Humanity, we supported the repair and reconstruction of three schools, four Anganwadis and two houses across three blocks of Wayanad, namely, Vythiri, Edavakka and Manathavady. It is estimated that 3000 school students, teachers, Anganwadi helpers and beneficiaries were rehabilitated through this initiative. Seven health camps were organized in the districts of Wayanad and Allepey to reduce the health-related vulnerabilities of disaster affected people in the flood. We reached out to 1200 people with medicines, check-ups and hospital referrals with our implementing partner Smile Foundation. The camps executed by medical teams provided preventive healthcare to beneficiaries as well as sensitizing them on prophylactic measures. During the health camps a range of services like routine check-up, medicine distribution, glucose test, weight and blood pressure check-up were provided under the curative services. Primary and preventive services included counselling on water related health problems & other health-related issues and provision of multi-vitamins and folic acid tablets.
